The Editor Starts Learning
I started dune-ide on April 23, 2026. The idea was an IDE that learns skills as it goes: agentic, self-teaching, built for how I'd been working all year, which was me and a model in the same buffer.
I'd spent the previous year writing a language, and I wanted an editor that actually understood it.
I rewrote it once before anyone saw it. It went public on June 18 as builds with a Homebrew tap and an issue tracker. Extensions load from Open VSX into ~/.dune/extensions. From late August it shipped almost every day for a month.
This was the same spring as pelago and the tish 1.x releases, so I started an IDE during the busiest stretch of the year.
Four Months Private, Then Daily
Dune IDE had been running on my own machine since April, through one full rewrite. The first public release, v1.5.4, came out on August 26, 2026, already on its fifth minor version.
Then I started shipping almost daily. v1.5.9 the next day. v1.5.10, v1.5.13, v1.5.14 over the following week. v1.7.0 on September 2 and v1.7.3 the day after.
It installs from a Homebrew tap: brew install --cask dune-ide for the app with a linked dune command, or just the CLI launcher on its own. The source stays private and builds go out automatically, with issues and discussions in public. Extensions come from Open VSX through an in-app panel and load from ~/.dune/extensions or the workspace, so I didn't have to build my own marketplace.
The goal is agentic, self skill learning: an editor that picks up new capabilities as you use it.
