React On Top Of Vulkan
September 2025, Rust.
Wgpu for rendering, so Vulkan on Linux and Metal on macOS, drawing the interface straight on the GPU instead of through a widget toolkit. Taffy for layout, which is flexbox, because after twenty years of building for browsers that's how I think about boxes. Cosmic-text for text. Notify plus libloading for hot reloading, so you can rebuild a component and watch it swap into a running window. Napi bindings so JavaScript can drive it all.
Put together it's a React-like GUI framework that renders straight to the GPU, which is a big goal for a prototype.
I started it one day before UI Gateway, which tried the same thing with a pluggable back end instead of a fixed one. The pluggable approach won for a while, and eventually Tish absorbed all of it.
