Bake, Compile, Repeat

Canvas and Pine started on May 23, 2026 as a GDevelop 5 project with a Bun and Node tooling layer around it. The tooling was the part I cared about most. It compiles the project file, bakes the assets, exports an HTML5 build and a deploy bundle, and captures a game state called "kitchen." After a year of building a language and its toolchains, I wanted a one-command build before there was much of a game.

I worked on it for four days, until the 27th. It was the first thing under the Schlop banner, and its tooling habits carried over to what came next there.

Canvas and Pine is a co-op cooking game made for a hackathon, playable in the browser on itch.io (it is an alpha). You and your friends set out to climb the summit near your mountain town with sunglasses, a selfie stick, a camp stove and the kitchen sink — and forgot the food. To save everyone from a weekend of beef jerky, you forage, hunt and fish, then cook fresh mountain meals back at camp.

The loop is talk, gather, cook, serve. Campers come to you with requests and vague hints; you head out to forage in the woods, fish at the lake or hunt in the mountains; you bring it back to the outdoor kitchen and cook against the clock; and you serve it to keep camp morale up before the glampers pack up and leave. Meals earn Vibes, which upgrade the camp — from basic tents to luxury yurts, faster stoves and new stations like a blender and a smoker — and unlock new areas and recipes. Every camper wants something different: the influencer needs a perfectly plated dish, the gym bro wants protein in volume, the forager won't eat anything processed, and the trust fund kid brought a $5,000 espresso machine and no beans.

It is built for co-op, so one player can run the kitchen while another runs to the lake, with GDevelop's peer-to-peer multiplayer and a solo offline mode. The game is GDevelop 5 with a Bun and Node toolchain around it that compiles the project, bakes assets and exports the HTML5 and deploy builds, and the 3D world is assembled from Kay Lousberg's KayKit packs — the Survival Kit for the camp, Resource Bits and RPG Tools for gathering, and the Mystery Monthly characters for the campers.
