Rebuilding Myself In Node

Ten days into 2017 I started rewriting my website again. I was doing it about once a year by then, and the 2017 version was the most over-engineered one yet.

Node and Express, Handlebars for the views, MongoDB behind it. A Tumblr feed pulled in through my own fork of node-tumblr, because the original didn't do what I wanted. Mailgun for mail. Stripe, because there was a store. The AWS SDK. And a JSON resume file loaded during a Heroku post-build step, so my resume was data instead of markup. I worked on it from January to the end of October.

devin.la had been up since January 2011, when the page said "I'm Devin Smith, a Los Angeles based web developer, designer, software, video, guru" and offered bio, resume, portfolio, blog and download. By 2018 the title was "Devin Smith | CTO, developer, designer, and beer geek" and the nav was About, Portfolio, Store, Blog, Code, Cocktails. Yes, there was a Cocktails tab. It had turned into a place for whatever I was into at the time.
