WoW Stat

A World of Warcraft realm status monitor that watches a server and notifies you, or relaunches WoW, when it comes back up. I rebuilt it several times: an original C# Windows version (wow-stat.net), a PHP web site, and the final signed Electron app for macOS and Windows at wowst.at (v3.0, 2016).

Waiting For The Realm

When a World of Warcraft realm went down, I'd go do something else and then spend the next hour alt-tabbing to check if it was back. So I wrote something to watch the server for me, tell me when it was up, and relaunch the game if I wanted. The first version was C# on Windows in 2007, a realm status monitor at wow-stat.net.

Then I kept rebuilding it. A PHP web version. A port to JavaScript for Titanium. And in the summer of 2016 a full rewrite in Electron, with signed builds for macOS and Windows, shipped and reshipped from July 19 to July 22 and hosted at wowst.at. By then I hadn't used a Windows PC in years, hadn't played WoW and hadn't touched C#, so I put the old code out as-is under BSD for anyone who wanted it.

Third Rewrite Of A 2007 Toy

The original was a small Windows utility in C#, written in 2007, that watched a World of Warcraft realm and told you when it came back up after maintenance. It could even relaunch the game for you. wow-stat.net ran for nearly ten years before it went dark in March 2016.

Four months later I rebuilt it for the third time. There'd been a C# version, then a PHP web version, and on July 19th, 2016, v3.0.0 came out as a signed Electron app for macOS and Windows at wowst.at. Signing it meant people could open it without a scary warning, and that was most of the work. 3.0.3 followed on the 20th, 3.0.4 on the 21st and 3.0.5 on the 22nd as packaging bugs came in from people's machines.

When I put the old C# code out, I hadn't used a Windows PC, played WoW, or written C# in years, and I said so: as-is, BSD, do whatever you want. Then I went and rebuilt it anyway.
