Selling The Habit Back
I registered a lot of domains, so I decided to build a place to sell them. RegPuppy went up at the end of May 2006, on regpuppy.com and the shorter regpup.com, and I worked on it until December 2007.
I wrote all of it on my own PHP framework: accounts, a cart, domain management, alerts, articles, banners and events, plus a template system that rendered its font themes through GD. Web fonts didn't exist yet, so if you wanted a headline in a specific typeface, the server generated a PNG of the text. I built that right into the theming.
Building the software was the part I actually wanted to do. It ran, but it never really got customers.
A Registrar On Cana
RegPuppy was a domain registrar at regpuppy.com: a private PHP site built on Cana, with OAuth so other services could sign in or hand off.
I kept it running from 2011 to 2014, touching it when a client needed a domain, when something expired, or when a PHP update broke the site.
