Recipes, Two Codebases
Of the six AI experiments I started that October, Nanana is the one that kept going. It was AI personalized recipes, at nanana.ai. It started on the 16th as a Next.js 14 web app and API, and two days later I added a Flutter mobile app. I kept working on it into January 2024.
It used OpenAI and Replicate for generation, MongoDB for storage, S3 for images, Apple sign-in, and App Store receipt verification, since there was meant to be a paid tier.
It was a Next app and a Flutter app for the same product at once, so two languages and two release processes with one API in the middle serving both. After two years inside anotter, a big streaming codebase, a Dart client and a TypeScript server felt pretty small.
