Posts Into A Database
In 2005 I wanted Usenet posts in MySQL, where I could query them, instead of stuck in one newsreader on one machine.
So over two days in March I wrote an NNTP group downloader and viewer in PHP. Setup was four steps: merge the SQL into your database, edit the config, run the importer to pull the posts, open the index to read them. It was signed "Devin Smith (php@arzdev.com)" with a "2005 arzdev.com" footer, like everything I released that year.
The viewer drew the thread tree with little plus, minus and vertical-line GIFs, and I ran the index through my own PHP encoder before releasing it as Usenet_Reader-ArzDev. It was a tool for me, and two days was all it needed.
