Two Fifty For A License
Version 3.6 came out the way software did in 2004: a zip, a text file, and a PayPal address. The Gemini Portal was a content management system with users, links, downloads, articles, news, forums and a gallery, and you added pages by dropping a file into the right folder. The part I was proudest of was ArzFS, a file system stored in the database, with functions that could reach out to the real file structure too. I built my own file layer inside my own CMS, and I'd probably do it again.
It was free for free services, and a license was $250 USD at arzynik.com or by PayPal, after which you got an email with a signed license for one website. The license had nine numbered clauses: full access to new source and bug fixes, technical support and direct contact with the author (me, in my bedroom), permission to remove my copyright notices, permission to run paid services, and my favorite, clause six, which required the full unmodified license image to sit in the site root at license.png.
I worked on it from March to October 2004. It sold, it kept selling into 2005, and it ran a clothing store.
