Gemini Portal, Port X2

Somebody needed a website for a salon in July 2004, and they got my CMS with a new theme. Sixteen days of work on an engine whose index.php opened with a banner comment reading "The Gemini Portal (Port X2)," dated June 3 2003, followed by the line "No source is to be used for any purpose ever unless by the author." I was very serious about that.

The routing was my favorite part. The page name came in as a query parameter, base64 encoded and gzipped, so the URL was a compressed blob instead of a readable path. Then it checked the database for that page's active and visible flags before including the page off disk. Pages in the filesystem, permissions in MySQL, with an admin and a themes directory beside it. Compressing the page name didn't do anything useful. I just thought it felt more like proper software than ?p=home.

That's what ArzDev mostly was in the Utah years: one engine I'd already written, dropped into a new folder with a new theme for each client.
