Keywords All The Way Down
Three days before Christmas 2005 I made a site whose whole job was to show up in search. The code is tiny: pull the URL out of the query string, strip the .html, turn the plus signs into spaces, look that phrase up in a big array in strings.php, and print a page. If the lookup missed, you landed on the key called "myspace bot home."
It was HTML 4.01 Transitional, a 700-pixel centered table, a style block built with string concatenation, and a class named redbold. There were sections for biz, ent, health, sports, tech, us and world, a cached Google News feed, and keyword lists. The images were two product screenshots, a picture of a MySpace friends list and a tag graphic. It was there to sell FriendBot to whoever searched the right phrase.
