Where FriendBot Came From
March 2004: a stylesheet served from my own server, a rant page, an alert test, and a test page called tom.html, because everyone had Tom on their friends list.
MySpace let you paste HTML into your profile, so I served my own stylesheet into it from my own server and could change how my profile looked without touching MySpace. The alert test and the Tom page were me finding out what it would let through.
That was about eleven weeks in the spring of 2004. A year later it turned into FriendBot, an actual company built on automating MySpace, profitable from the first month and running until 2009.
