Flash Video Before YouTube

DislexikFilms was an indie film company that wanted its work on its own website, and in 2004 that meant Flash. YouTube didn't exist yet. If you wanted video in a browser you built a Flash player or wired up somebody's skin set yourself, and I did both: player.fla, then player2.fla, and a bunch of skins with names like SkinUnderPlayStopSeekMuteVol and SteelExternalAll.

I also did the design: a logo, a layout, a main menu, a home page, a black and white bio page, a contact plate and a t-shirt. Then the Flash build itself, dixl.fla, which is what the site ran on, with an intro track I cut myself.

The dislexik account was on ArzHost, my hosting company, so I designed it, built it, and ran the server it lived on. dislexikfilms.com went up in December 2004. I worked on it until September 2008, and the site stayed up into 2016.

Simple SMS, Version 5.1

The Dislexik Films site was three days of work in early November 2004, built on Simple SMS, the portal I'd started on January 14th, 2003. By then it was at version 5.1.

Pages were PHP files keyed by name, with an active column in a MySQL table deciding who could see what: public, logged in, or admin only. The page name went in the query string base64 encoded and gzip deflated, mostly to make the URLs look like nothing. It had themes, an admin side, a config file, and a SQL dump to set up a new copy.

That's how I did client sites back then: copy the portal, bump the version, write the pages, hand over a login.
