ArzEnc

ArzEnc Beta 1 (July 2005), my PHP source encrypter: a web form that deflates, bit-shuffles and substitutes a string so PHP scripts can be distributed obfuscated; the encoder behind my '-enc' releases.

ArzEnc Beta 1

ArzEnc Beta 1 was one afternoon's work: a plain PHP form with two textareas, Decrypted on top, Encrypted below, and an Encrypt button. Paste in source, get back something unreadable that still runs.

The method was pretty silly and I love it. Take the string, run a table of character substitutions over it, gzdeflate it twice at level 9, expand every byte into eight ASCII bits, then rotate the bit string a random number of times between 20 and 57, each by a random offset of 3 to 9 characters, and append each offset to the end so the decoder can undo it. It isn't real encryption, since the instructions for undoing it are in the payload.

I was releasing free PHP scripts with my email on them, and for the ones I sold or didn't want copied outright, this made a version I could hand out. Every "-enc" file I shipped came out of this form. I even ran the Usenet reader I wrote that March through it, so now I can't easily read my own source. I wrote it on July 19 and never touched it again.
