The Shop Gets A Name
arzdev.com was active from February 2004 to February 2005. It was a PHP portal with its own admin, auth, pages, themes and a Flash gateway, because in 2004 a Flash front door was a selling point.
ArzDev was the name I put on my freelance work so it would look like a shop instead of just me. Next to it were ArzHost, my hosting business, and arzy.net, my personal site, all sharing the same servers. ArzHost hosted the client sites, ArzDev built them, and the free tools I put out brought people in.
Once it had a name, it got a portal to run it, old versions kept around, and a redirect from the Tripod site. It was the first time I built infrastructure for myself instead of for a project.
The Freelance Shop
ArzDev was my freelance shop: arzdev.com, radio.arzdev.com, and arzsoft.be, a software domain on a Belgian TLD because it was cheap and spelled right.
In March 2005 the pitch was web design, web development, web hosting, eCommerce, custom systems, and spyware removal, with a portfolio, a forum and a downloads section. Later the tools list grew: "PHP, ASP, ColdFustion, MySQL, Microsoft SQL, PosgreSQL," typos and all, plus cPanel, Linux, Windows, Apache and IIS. That was all me.
It ran until early 2009. Give.mobi started in 2008 and Luma the year after, and the freelance work wound down.
