Ordering Burritos In A Zoom Call
In September 2020 everyone lived in Zoom, and Zoom had a chatbot API. So I built one that ordered Chipotle. It got its own GitHub org and its own domain, and it took eight days.
Next.js 9.5 with serverless API routes, MongoDB Atlas for state, Fuse.js doing fuzzy search over the menu since nobody types a burrito name right, all deployed on Vercel. Developing it meant starting ngrok, registering a chatbot in the Zoom marketplace, pasting the values in, and installing the app from the Local Test section.
It was a joke, but a chat window in a meeting is actually a pretty good place to order lunch, since everyone already has it open. I built it alongside Point and a bunch of client work, and it's the same spirit as the nine hackathons over the next two years: silly name, build it fast, don't sell it.
